STARKVILLE, Miss.—Ryan A. Folk, assistant professor in Mississippi State’s Department of Biological Sciences, is the recipient of a prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program award from the National Science Foundation.

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State faculty members continue tackling current social issues in the Faculty Book Talk series, this month highlighting Elizabeth Miller, a Department of English associate professor.

To better serve faculty in conducting cutting-edge research into pressing social and scientific issues, Mississippi State’s College of Arts and Sciences announces this year’s recipients of the Strategic Research Initiative (SRI) programs -- the Faculty Seed Funding program and the Race and Racism Research Funding program -- an annual grant program providing funds for faculty research.

Four Mississippi State faculty members in the College of Arts and Sciences recently were awarded inaugural Professional Development in Teaching Grants, a new initiative designed to foster undergraduate student success by equipping faculty and staff with tools needed to lead large numbers of students.

“I come from a long line of learners and storytellers in my family who instilled in me a love of history,” said Leigh Soares an assistant professor of history at Mississippi State University and an affiliated faculty member with the African American Studies program. “Under less constrained circumstances, some of them might have become college professors too.”

A Mississippi State University research team is using more than half a million dollars from the U.S. Department of Energy nuclear physics program to study the emerging field of quantum computing. The research is part of a 2020 goal set by MSU’s Quantum Task Force to explore interdisciplinary programs for training MSU students in the evolving technology of quantum computing and quantum information science.

Mississippi State is honoring eight outreach projects with the university’s sixth annual Excellence in Community Engagement Awards.

A Mississippi State University communication team recently garnered four top awards at the Southern Public Relations Federation conference in Huntsville for their efforts at increasing the message and visibility of MSU’s College of Arts and Sciences. Along with college staff, students in the Department of Communication took top SPRF awards for their hands-on projects in the classroom.
