College of Arts and Sciences presents 2021 Outstanding BSIS Advisor awards

STARKVILLE, Miss.— Mississippi State University’s College of Arts and Sciences presented three MSU employees with “Outstanding BSIS Sponsor” awards in December for using their advisory positions to assist students seeking a Bachelor of Science of interdisciplinary studies.

BSIS is a university-wide degree coordinated through the College of Arts and Sciences and is intended to allow students maximum flexibility to custom-design a curriculum to their personal and career goals.

The Outstanding BSIS Sponsor award was created in 2020 to honor academic sponsors who “went the extra mile” to assist students during a tumultuous year.

Kasondra Harris, the academic coordinator of BSIS in the College of Arts and Sciences, said they decided to continue honoring BSIS sponsors because the faculty have continued to find special ways to help students navigate their path to academic success.

“The three recipients of the Outstanding BSIS Sponsorship Awards this year all exemplify the student-focused, engaged advising that makes a difference in a student’s success at MSU and that is the hallmark of our BSIS program,” Harris said. “The sponsors chosen this year have been quick to respond to our students. They are very detailed when looking over their programs of study and offering suggestions about what classes should be taken. Knowing the number of students that they each have in their own departments plus giving this individualized care to our BSIS students deems them more than worthy of this token of appreciation,” said Harris.

Recipients of the award include:

Brandy Roberts, instructor for the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Rachel Tentoni, academic coordinator for the College of Education.

Dinetta Karreim, student services coordinator for the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Foundations in the College of Education.

MSU’s College of Arts and Sciences includes more than 5,000 students, 323 full-time faculty members, nine doctoral programs, 15 master’s programs, and 27 undergraduate academic majors offered in 14 departments. It also is home to the most diverse units for research and scholarly activities, including natural and physical sciences, social and behavioral sciences, and the humanities.
