Student Profile: Sofia Alvarez
“Politics is such a controversial topic. But I wanted to better understand the roots and reasons behind the political decisions being made,” said Sofia Alvarez about her decision to major in political science.
In addition to her involvement within her major, the Belmont, MS, native is a member of the Bobby and Judy Shackouls Honors College, the vice president of the Latino Student Association on campus and the treasurer for the International Student Advisory Board. She also helps the College of Arts and Sciences recruit students to campus as an ambassador. Alvarez has won multiple scholarships including the Dr. Marty Wiseman Endowed Scholarship, the Dr. Tip Allen Memorial Scholarship, the Lucille Bailey Thomas Endowed Scholarship, and Tri-State Loyalty Scholarship Honors.
One of Alvarez’s favorite events MSU hosts is Global Night, an event hosted by the International Student Advisory Board every fall semester. This event showcases different cultures and ideas through food and other performances.
Alvarez encourages new students “not to be afraid” to get involved on campus.
