BALA Program Requirements

BALA Program Requirements

Admission:

Admission to the Liberal Arts major requires a 2.5 GPA or higher and approval by the program’s admission’s committee. Upon approval from the Liberal Arts Advisor, a student may have their major changed preliminary, pending formal committee approval. In order to obtain formal approval by the program’s admissions committee, students must submit an application through the IDS 2111 Intro to Interdisciplinary Studies course. Applications must contain the following: application form (see Liberal Arts advisor), student’s proposed program of study, and entrance essay. The essay should explain how the Liberal Arts degree and the proposed program of study will assist in achieving academic and career goals.

Coursework:

Each Liberal Arts program of study must consist of a broad, but coherent pattern of courses in 2-4 disciplines within the College of Arts and Sciences. These disciplines make up the emphasis areas within a student’s program of study. Students may propose an individualized combination of emphasis areas, or they may select a preestablished concentration pathway that specifies the emphasis areas they must complete.

In their senior year, students complete a senior project, capstone, or internship with their faculty sponsor to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired throughout their academic studies.
